Graphic Designer Ross Mackay

Ross Mackay is our next designer to come under the Business Boom spotlight. After a rejuvenating 4 year travel period, Ross decided to apply his creativity to the world of design, learning his trade at Manchester’s Shillington College

“I’m not going to start by saying I played with Play-Doh when I was younger and decided I wanted to be an artist. I think we are all artists; I was just dumb enough to try and make a career out of it. This began by spending 4 years of my life studying Fine Art at Dun Laoghaire College of Art, Design and Technology in Dublin. Here I was taught what other people considered to be ‘precious’ & found out the hard way that people just aren’t interested in buying 12ft x 8ft sound installations, especially not with a recession on the horizon.”

“Due to this I spent 4 years living and travelling throughout Asia while doing everything I could to give my brain a deserved rest from art. With my return, however, my juices were rejuvenated and in full flow observing everything creative, but more so design. What drew me to design is the way it allows me to create something that isn’t limited to the walls of a gallery. It is universal; letting my work interact with individuals on a broader scale, while bringing my style back to the fundamentals – to create art for arts sake.”

“After learning the tricks of the trade at Shillington College I now feel I have the knowledge and tools to start inputting into the design world. I am currently scouring the net for more and more inspiration while working at a studio in Manchester. I am also hoping to work freelance jobs whenever possible.
