Graphic Design Student Paul Murray is heading into his final year at Stockport College this September; he has nothing but good things to say about the course and can’t wait to springboard into the world of the creative designer.
“Even though I’m still a student I’m self-employed. I work on a freelance basis for a local market research provider designing bespoke survey layouts, often for some pretty well-known brands and organisations. I also take on other freelance clients from time-to-time, typically designing brand identities.”
“Over the summer I’ve got several personal projects that should keep me busy. I’m trying to make the most of my remaining time at university by exploring more expressive and creative approaches to my work, as well as experimenting with other mediums such as motion design and photography.
One designer who’s currently having a huge influence on my work is James Victore. I’m using hand-drawn type in a lot of my work at the minute, which is largely thanks to him. Storm Thorgerson’s photographic approach to design is also something I’m keen to explore in the future. On the other hand, I’m passionate about traditional ‘Swiss’ design and typography. I think it’s important to have a good understanding of the fundamental rules of design before you start flouting them.”
